Oscars Underdog Watchlist

23 January 2019

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences currently released all the nominees for 91st Academy Awards, set to air on February 24.

Some of the nominees sound more than familiar, such as A Star Is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, and even The Black Panther. While more blockbusters are given the slot to compete on the awards, there are other films we may only heard once, but really—we need to watch them more than once.

Here’s our special Oscars underrated watch list to prepare ourselves for the upcoming Academy Awards:

THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS

Presented by wild-west virtuoso Coen Brothers, the film’s inclusion in Oscars reinforces the presence of Netflix as a key player in cinema industry.  The plot rounds around six short stores set in 19th century Old West, with a nice twist at the end of humorous sequence a la Coen.

ISLE OF DOGS

Owning one of the biggest hypes in early 2018, Isle of Dogs remarks Wes Anderson’s cinematic milestone in stop-motion animated pictures. The film did not receive the place it deserves in Indonesian cinemas, but the film is visually pleasing (as expected from Wes) as well as it is beautifully written.

ROMA

The winner of Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival is a fresh air in western cinema. Depicted in black-and-white screen and complemented in vigorous cinematography technique, the Mexican-American film deserves more than its box office flop.

SHOPLIFTERS

Telling the story of a Japanese family who shoplift to make a living, Shoplifters gives us the vibe of 90s feel-good movie. The film that won Palme D’Or at Cannes Film Festival will make us start re-questioning, “What makes a family?”

BLACKKKLANSMAN

The film does not only dominate Oscars’ nomination; it also marks Spike Lee’s first nomination as Best Director after spending three decades in the industry. The film successfully transforms one of the darkest histories in America with juicy humor and action.

THE FAVOURITE

Presented by the director of The Lobster and The Killing of A Sacred Deer, the film highlights the extraordinary performance from three actresses: Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, and Rachel Weisz. With authentic production design and interesting plotline, you’re not gonna sleep on this one.
