After amazing collaboration with Indonesian designers like Patrick Owen in bringing Disney’s characters to the runway, Disney Indonesia opens 2018 with Marvel Studios’ Black Panther-inspired fashion show.

This time, Disney is working with six ready-to-wear labels including Shop at Velvet, Matahari Department Store, JD.ID, Monstore, Canvas Living, and POPULO Batik.

The film that tells the story of T’Challa, an aspired King of Wakanda, is being transformed into black (of course) and earth-colored fashion pieces with strong cuts. The collection is also dominated by nature-inspired patterns that are often cited as one of African traditional clothing identities. The use of metal accessories and glistening beads emphasizes the fierceness of overall look.

The brand that caught our attention was POPULO, whose past work is closely attached to batik. How do they merge the local wisdom with fantastical, fierce looks from Black Panther film? “Black Panther sharp-witted, assertive, and protective personalities aspire us to explore with non-contrast Batik pattern based on our own motif called Gunungan, which represents strength and natural protection, a long-existing idea that quite common in Indonesia”, said Dimas Wicaksono, General Manager of POPULO.

Aimed for young adult market, the collection that comprises wide-ranging pieces from t-shirts, biker jackets, to night gown are being presented in welcoming Black Panther film. As the film will be released this Valentine’s, the fans would be glad to purchase the showcased pieces on JD.ID and mataharimall.com.
