Kim Jones Reinvents Menswear

Really, what can we say more about menswear other than “luxury street wear” these days? Well, Kim Jones sure has a lot to say.

Kim Jones was not honored Fashion Trailblazer Award by the British Fashion Council for no reason. The artistic director of Dior Men has raised menswear from ash to flame with his couture work, and more recently, with his one-of-kind Winter 2019/2020 collection.

Held at the foot of Eiffel Tower, the most authentic Paris identity, the collection is staged in completely dark space, with 76-meters long treadmill runway being the only source of light. The models stood almost completely motionless on the running treadmill, resembling “ancient marble statues”, as the brand said it.

That’s all we have to say about the presentation because everyone was completely drawn by how Jones reinvents Parisian fashion heritage—from shapes, techniques, to material. His Winter 2019 collection is a true equilibrium of art and fashion, aesthetics and functionality, masculinity and femininity, dexterity and simplicity. With him, Dior Men has set the bar high in terms of defining what couture should be.

Here’s a quick look from the show:

ANIMAL PRINTS

Exotic animal prints, from tiger to snow leopard, complement the dapper tailoring of the outerwear. The bizarre combination ends up in elegantly cut coats, bombers, and biker jackets.

COAT ARCADE

Adapting yet another Japanese influence in his work, Jones utilizes satin scarf to take his creation of long coat to the next level. Look at how effortlessly elegant it is.

OPTICAL ILLUSION

Experimenting with layers and metallic color palette, Kim Jones created optical illusion with his silk suit, single-breasted coat, and jumpsuit.

ARTIFICIAL CLASSIC

With velvet and abstract prints, Jones is amalgamating aspects of an art gallery to his futuristic depiction of shirt, suit, and vest.
