The Row: First Menswear

Pioneered by Hollywood legendary twins Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, lux fashion label The Row presented their first ever menswear collection.

Through their Instagram account, the US-based house is throwing hints on upcoming menswear collection for Fall/Winter 2018 Season. All of them are bleak, black-and-white, and only contains the essential parts of men’s clothing—saving the whole thing for the last.

In a glimpse, The Row is maintaining their name as an extra-luxe fashion label with superior fabric, very neat cutting, and clean design. Found in 2006, this would be the first time for the twins to launch menswear. What do they have to say about it?

Inspired by the streets in New York City in 80s and 90s, the current men’s collection is described as “classic suit with updated modern details”. As seen in their teaser images, the collection will include suits, ties, coats, knitwear, and accessories like wallet.

Unlike the twins’ previous trial on launching capsule men collection, this one is the brainchild of two years of research. Mary-Kate said, “We want to be able to offer the menswear market those same same core foundation pieces at a luxury level”. So to say, the products will retain The Row’s identity. That includes sophistication from exotic fabric (this one is from Japan), traditionality from the European hand-stitching, and meticulousness in fitting process.

Although the knitwear is produced in Italy while the shirts are derived from France (only t-shirts and denims are produced in USA), the twins insist that once we look at the collection we would see the authentic masculine style of NYC. It would not be as sharp as the British or as soft as the Italian—it lies in the minimalism of NYC masculine style dating back to three decades ago.

This debut collection is set to release in October, but the hype over this cross-gender expansion has made the Olsens one of the most talked about designers this season.
